Increasing coping options

“Because stress is not necessarily caused by events themselves but is the result of one’s perceptions of them, trying to reframe one’s actions towards difficult situations can effectively reduce stress.” (Brislin; Yoshida, 1994) After losing the use of limbs or finding out about a life threatening disease, it is important for victims to approach the loss or new information from a positive perspective by “viewing stressful situations as challenges rather than obstacles, and maintaining a sense of control over various life events.” (Brislin; Yoshida, 1994)
